I imagine the stories probably were exaggerated. Vikings didn't have their own system of writing (I'm pretty sure that runes were just used for religious purposes) so it's not like we have their point of view, and I'm sure the Christians would have exaggerated. Especially about heathens. Of course, vikings did basically make a religion of battle, so who knows?
