Default Star Wars: Rogue One

Posted this in the movie hype thread, but since it's Star Wars, it deserves its own thread. Here's the official teaser trailer, which was released on April 7.

Okay, so my big thing is that "Rogue One" implies Rogue Squadron. To anyone who doesn't know what that is, Rogue Squadron were the pilots fighting the AT-AT's at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back. One of the pilots was in Return of the Jedi, but I don't remember if Rogue Squadron itself was ever referenced in the movie, so its presence in the official canon is very minimal.

But for those steeped in the Expanded Universe (which is no longer canon), Rogue Squadron is legendary. It was formed by Luke Skywalker after the Battle of Yavin (the end of A New Hope) but before Empire Strikes Back as the elite X-Wing squadron in the Rebellion. Anyone who isn't nobody will remember them from the Rogue Squadron video game on the N64, they had their own comic series which took place between the first and second movies, and went on to become the heroes of some of the only "good" books from the EU. So they have a storied history that any true Star Wars nerd will be intimately familiar with.

But that is all gone now that the Extended Universe is no longer canon. So if this movie is alluding to what it might be alluding to, then whatever Rogue Squadron is or will be is completely up in the air. I'm betting that one of the characters in the trailer might be Wedge Antilles, who was Luke Skywalker's second-in-command until he left to train with Yoda, after which he was the long-time leader of Rogue Squadron, the second best pilot in all of the Rebellion, and one of the most beloved characters in all the EU. He even had bit parts in all three movies of the original trilogy, so he's still canon.

If this movie is going to have anything to do with Rogue Squadron, then I am stoked, but if I'm being had, then no matter how good this movie turns out to be, I will be at least somewhat disappointed.
