There's definitely a lot to be said about living on your own. Teaches you responsibility. Mind you, losing your parent will do that too. I was amazed to find that bills didn't get paid by magic, and there was a place where food had to be bought!
Obviously, that's a joke. Still, moving out, even for a year, made me knuckle down and be more responsible. When you can't turn to anyone you learn to make it work.
