Thanks, blankmind - I took your advice and have just listened to Kid A. On first run-through, I like National Anthemn, Optimistic and Idioteque best; luckily I found YouTube clips with subtitles for most songs because although Thom Yorke's voice comes through high and clear, I couldn't make out much of what he was saying. Maybe that's because the lyrics are idiosyncratic and unpredictable, which is all good of course.
For some reason I had expected their music to be more innovative, but now, instead, I understand why the word "boring" also turns up amid all praise. I don't hear anything groundbreaking or controversial - just some well-crafted electronic rock. Still, definitely worth a second listen...
