There really aren't any good "free" recording programs, but if you really don't want to spend any money, pirate a copy of Sonar. Even the older versions are pretty decent. To do it right you'll need an interface (the Presonus Firepod is usually what's paired with Sonar, you can also check out the MOTU 8pre. Both can be had for about $150 used), but as long has you have a good (and I mean GOOD) 24 bit soundcard, you'll be able to get better recordings than you would with some crappy free program like Audacity.
Yea man, I use Sonar 7 PE. I'd recommend it over Pro-tools, but I don't know how solid of a copy someone can get via free download.

I'm still not wanting to upgrade to version 8, because I see a lot of people yelling about the bug introductions over at the sonar forums. But I still want Guitar Rig LE and DEFINITELY want the full version of Dimension that comes with the Sonar upgrade. (Although they STILL never fixed the external FX problem I don't think.)
