The lyrics definitely get comical but I think he is trying to express a real sadness. I'm probably biased though from seeing the documentary thing that came with my CD (all filmed by Jonze?). He's definitely self conscious like in his description of how his g
ay rumors began - he's practically cringing. He also seems generally embarrassed and ashamed about how his career turned out.
