I don't need to kid myself, to me there's a difference between a chick flick and a proper rom-com. Although they aren't mutually exclusive, chick flicks usually lack depth. (17 Again, She's The Man, 10 Things I Hate About You, John Tucker Must Die etc.)
Romantic Comedies (Annie Hall, The Apartment, Manhattan, Groundhog Day) to me have a lot more soul and aren't just popcorn flicks for idiot 14 year old girls.
I'd say 500 Days of Summer was more in the vein of the classic Romantic Comedy.
