there is a lot of dross on that album
you filter out all the crap and you have a really good LP with 14 tracks on it

Some filler, yes. Compare it to most other double albums though and its pretty bloody impressive, not only in song quality but scope as well. Better than Gish i'd say now. Concerning the review, leaves a lot to be desired considering it just repeats 'dull ballad' over and over again. Some are (Farewell and Goodnight, Stumbleine) some aren't (To Forgive, 33, In The Arms Of Sleep).

Not on me obviously, and i'm Mr Ineloquent.
I think i few duff slow numbers are the sore point of all SP albums, even Siamese Dream, i don't see much point in those last 2 songs existing.

Its a very brief review, theres really nothing insightful about it its just something that either you'll agree with or not.
Personally I love pomp rock, and this album. This album does have filler but that goes for any double album, I still consider The White Album, The Wall, Physical Grafitti and Tommy to be great albums dispite their filler. There are some bad songs. Love sounds like bad industrial metal and We Only Come Out Night is, well thats basically this albums "Wild Honey Pie". And Take Me Down might very well be the most sappy song ever written. And X.Y.U. I have no f*cking idea what they were on when they did that one. But those are the only songs I have any real problem with. Tonight Tonight, 1979, An Ode To No One, Jellybelly, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, Here Is No Why, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans, Cupid De Locke, Where Boys Fear To Tread, Galapogos and By Starlight are my favorite tracks on the album. Even though Siamese Dream is a much more consistant album with less filler. I prefer Mellon Collie as a whole. I do think I understand though why a lot of Indie/Punk/Alt rock fans hate this album and The Smashing Pumpkins, its because the Pumpkins were labeled as alternative rock, but you had a lot of these purists who think alternative rock is about miminalism and lo fi production and sounding as less "arena rock" as possible. The Pumpkins took the opposite direction obviously, they were going for that prog rock grandeur. This album was a real leap for them and I fail to understand how even those that hate it can't still appreciate its ambitiousness.
