Default Kerli - Utopia (EP) [2013]

Well, much to my surprise Kerli has recently released a new EP (March 19, 2013). I just discovered her in February, and since then had no idea she had worked on new material.

Kerli is Estonian and such an interesting artist. She is entertaining, but so far I've only really liked one song of hers, which is "Tea Party."

1. Can't Control the Kids
2. The Lucky Ones
3. Love Me or Leave Me
4. Sugar
5. Here and Now
6. Chemical

My general vibe about Kerli (and this album) is that she is three steps shy of being "fresh." She looks fresh, and I want to like her, really I do. But for some strange reason I can't wrap my brain around, her sound is stale. With the exception of Sugar, which is unique and sexy, the tracks on this EP all seem like I've heard them before, and are shadows of great music made by similar artists.

The first track has a lot of energy and it definitely feels danceable. It's absolutely a late-night clubbing track. It's the kinda track that if I had heard it spun by a DJ I would be like "cooooool" and dance the f outta it. But I would also, most likely, not think about it in the morning, unlike some songs that stay with me even through the drunkest of sleeps. So much for Can't Control the Kids.

The Lucky Ones was released as a single a while back. For a single, it lacks catchiness and style. The song is really benign somehow, despite having (relatively) heavy bits midway through. Something between a video game soundtrack and happy hardcore.

The third track on the album blends well following the previous "dirty beats" thing. But I don't like it -- an unremarkable ballad.

Sugar is definitely my favorite track on the EP. The only problem is I don't have a context for it. It's not breakfast music or walking to work music, and it's not really appropriate for the ferry either...hmmm, possible sex music but really quite fruity. I dunno. I probably won't download it.

Now that I'm listening to the last two tracks, I kind of like the idea of this EP as a soundtrack to sweet bedroom times. Yeah, let's go with that.

Overall rating: 6/10
