Zappa has a oddball style.... A lot of his music is very jazz based, with lots of avant-garde, neo classical and r&b elements and absurdist Monty Python style humor.... He's also known for his tendacy to mock any trend that comes around, Zappa was never above going beyond the boundries of bad taste (in lyrical terms), nonetheless he is one of my favorite musicians for that very reason, a virtuoso, but a virtuoso with balls.... His willingness to try new things was always endearing to me, even when he failed. In the 90s he began experiementing with a style known as musical concrete, easy to say it was very inaccessible stuff.... He had a very powerful (if indirect) influence on the psychedelic and progressive rock movements of the 60s and 70s.

Freak Out!, We're Only In It For The Money, Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Chunga's Revenge, Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophie ('), Grand Wazoo, One Size Fits All, Shiek Yerbouti and Joes Garage is among his very best work... Zappa has done over 60 albums, he was a workaholic to say the least.

Hot Rats is still my favorite.

Though his mid-70s stuff is also fantastic... Songs like Don't Eat The Yellow Snow crossed the fine line between clever and stupid.

His 80s stuff i'd avoid... His 60s and 70s catalog is a goldmine, his 80s and 90s stuff has some goodies but also a fair share of crap.

I'm sure you wouldn't care for his first five 80s albums, because of Steve Vai.

I've only got Hot Rats and it's awesome. He's a great composer.

60's is by far my favorite, especially the Mothers stuff. But it's all good, check out You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore for a general introduction to his later stuff.

Oh yeah, and I do believe that that CNN video was what got me into Frank Zappa.

Great guitarist too.

He ran his band with a iron first though, his musicians were never permitted to use drugs, if a band member even thought about rolling a doobie, Frank would fire his ass.
