Part of what makes Zeppelin a consensus choice as a top 5 band ever is their ability to from style to style and pluck influence from genres and still have a distinct unmistakable sound that only they produced.

Songs like "What is and what should never be" "Ramble On", "Over the Hills and far Away" and their most famous track "Stairway to Heaven" all feature them ranging from a mellow often times acoustic verse or introduction into a breakneck rock and roll guitar solo laden consummation.

You're right to say that Zeppelin will be looked upon as pioneers solely in the realm of Hard Rock but their folk, jazz, blues and world music tendencies often times led to the compelling songs that make their discography so consistent and prolific.

Regardless of personal taste, the fans of Zeppelin are fans of the entire catalog in the vast majority of cases.

Word.

III is a fan favorite, and the 2nd side is all folk and acoustic stuff.

I love their softer, not so rock n roll songs a lot. The Rain Song, No Quarter, Ten Years Gone, etc.

the who seem to have a grasp on reality to some of their songs. wont get fooled again is a perfect example. but zep is more of just a good rock band. the who is george carlin of rock. they tell you about the real worlds problems and also entertain you

So lyrically The Who are better, thats not even debatable, but who makes the better music, and who is more "raw" and "in your face" is certainly debatable.

Well...I think it is safe to say that Zep, when rocking, were more in your face and raw, and I say that with good reason: The Who's most raw, rocking record was My Generation. They never repeated the raw intensity of that album in what was to follow. Zep must go down at the louder, more furious band.

the who is one of the most unorganized bands ever, keith moon never wrote a sheet of drum licks and it still sounded amazing because he included the right amount of insanity into his music. daltry i think has a better voice than plant. id say its 50/50 because moon and daltry (in my opinion) are better than bonham and plant, and page and jones (in my opinion) are better than townshend and entwistle

Okay, for one thing, if Robert Plant was the WORST singer in the world (which he isn't) and if Daltrey was the best (which he isn't), ol' Bonzo would still have the nuts to squash Moon with. No one has ever come close to what Bonham did, and I doubt anyone will. Both Moon and Bonham had that frenetic talent: they didn't plan their next move, they didn't know what was coming, but they still sounded good. However, Bonham, unlike Moon, could carry on a drum solo for fifteen minutes without anyone asking "what's this prick doing?" And it wasn't just that. Bonzo gave a layered feel to the entire library of Zeppelin's works. He was in every sense impeccable to the last.
