I guess it's just a fundamental disagreement between us that other music exists.
Of course music goes past top 40.

Today's popular music doesn't though. The most listened too genres doesn't. It is like you are trying to say classical music is as popular as Pop, EDM or Hip hop.

The charts are less representative of music culture today than it ever has given how fragmented it is. Death Grips never broke the top 40, do you think they're not relevant?

Death Grips is only relevant to the niche group of listeners that like abstract hip hop. They are good at what they do but on the grand scheme of things they aren't relevant to today's popular music.

Well there you have it folks. Death Grips is not relevant. Remember that if you find yourself agreeing with DJ on this subject.

But what of the influence? Underground styles bring inspiration to the mainstream. Bowie cited DG as an influence on his last album, and I'm sure there are other popular artists influenced by them. Same goes for lots of other groups.

This is true but they themselves never make it to the pinnacle. They don't get to the mainstream themselves. There are loads of people out there that have NO idea who Death Grips is.

Ignorant people don't negate relevancy.

Your definition of relevance is a bit off imo.

Mine might be too wide but yours is most certainly far too narrow.

Maybe that's where the issue lies.
