Apparently, the last time a pope "abdicated" was six hundred years ago. Think about that: that's like the 1400s! Like, before Columbus discovered the US of A! It's been greeted by shock all over, but most people in the know are now praising him for having the "moral courage to admit he's not up to the task anymore". I dunno: anyone using this as an excuse to quit any other job would be laughed at. Wonder if he gets a big severance package?

Plus there's now going to be the almost unheard of situation of having two living popes in Italy, as apparently even after he jacks in the job it's like an ex-president and he still gets called the pope. Confusing?

Meh, I vote for the Space Pope!
Chances of a black pope is nill to none let alone a African one. I mean Africans are not treated with no respect. I mean seriously most African countries like DRC Congo (where my parents are from), Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, and even Gabon are all in ****ty conditions. Sure, Ghana and Nigeria as well as South Africa are doing well but those are the only AFRICAN COUNTRIES doing well. I mean until Africa gets REAL INDEPENDENCE and Canada, USA, France, and UK stop treating Africans like a piece of **** then having a African pope will never occur. As long idiotic Europeans and Americans believe that Africans are puppets, then having a Ghanian man as the next pope is so impossible.

Hommes du Afrique de sont humaine aussi. Comprendre que puissance du l'ouest veut de attaque innocent africains pour non raison. Tres bete. Un, librez Afrique SVP puis nous peux avoir a africain pope pour tout la peuple du ce monde.

African men are also human. Understand that the western power want to attack the innocent africans for no reason. Very stupid. One, free Africa please then we can have a African pope for all the people of this world.

lawl. Catholicism as practiced in Europe is radically different from that practiced in the Third World. Religions are inevitably syncretic due to cultural and economic reasons (link), so the shift of the Catholic Church's center of gravity from Europe to the Third World has implications beyond the race of the Pope. Obvious implications, for secular people of the Leftist and Libertarian persuasions, include the rather draconian view of Homosexuality which is prominent in the Third world as well as the growing religious conflict in Africa & portions of Asia between Christians and Muslims. This shift of gravity has been the subject of numerous books, and the far right is certainly aware of it (link). Even PBS is aware of the phenomenon of "Reverse Missionaries" (link), who are some of the strangest creatures you'll ever have the misfortune of running into. I myself had an encounter with a Nigerian man who not only insisted that racism was solely attributable to Darwin's theory of natural selection but became irate when I pointed out Christianity's role in imperialism and slavery.

I google search who could be the next pope, there are two who have the potential to become the next pope that are from Africa:

Cardinal Francis Arinze, born in Eziowelle, Nigeria
Cardinal Peter Turkson, born in Nsuta-Wassaw Ghana

So they are only two out of a possible eleven from Africa. The odds are really 11 out of 118 (USA Today figures) not nill to none.
