KL 7/10

I'll reply as if that question were directed at me. I think Borat is probably the most important movie that has ever been made, at least in this country. It shows a lot of Americans for who they truly are. Some of them are very kind and caring, and show a lot of sensitivity to foreigners. Others are just complete jack*sses.

Growing up, I watched a lot of T.V. and got a very slanted view of the world. In many other countries, they treat children as if they were little adults. In this country we try to create a very Utopian perception in the child's mind, and when we get out in the real world, we realize how far from reality that perception really is. Children are very frightened when they come in the world, so it's understandable we're very sensitive with them. However, I think maybe around the time a child is 3 or 4, it would be OK to start telling them about the world. I was probably still watching Sesame Street when I was 8 or 9. Meanwhile, you're hearing about wars in other countries, and it seems so far fetched in your mind, you tell yourself it must be happening in another world or something.

That didn't have much to do with the movie, but what's hilarious is the fact that a lot of the people who he talked to in the movie, tried to sue him after it came out. I believe one woman was quoted as saying, "He makes people look like they're idiots," Think about that for a second. He doesn't go up to people and pull their pants down. He sits there and talks to them. Lady, you make yourself look like an idiot. When are people gonna' start taking responsibility for their own actions? For that woman, apparently it will be in her 60's, because I'm pretty sure she's at least 50.

As far as that second paragraph, the point I'm trying to get across is this is the most important movie that I've ever seen. Most Hollywood box office smashes are about fighting or explosions, or sex. This was probably the realest movie I've ever seen. In terms of being a documentary, in other documentaries, the other actors know it's a documentary, so to some extent they're actors, because they're going along with the script.

Sacha Baron Cohen is very believable as this sort of naive foreigner who comes to see America, 'the greatest country in the world,' with the idea that all American's will be very friendly, very approachable people. Boy, is he in for a shock. Of course, I'm sure Cohen has spent time in the states, and already knows about it, but from an actor's perspective, he did a great job of pulling off that role, sort of like a kid in a candy store, compared to his frugal Kazakhstan, he is just thrilled to be in America, and see the lights in Times Square, and get to meet all these wonderful people. It makes you realize how much we Americans take things for granted sometimes.
