Or a pissed up Geordie, or worse, a pissed up Glaswegian! Strangely, when I'm drunk, I can actually understand them better.

I am have an immense jealousy in the fact that you are forced to learn other languages - the driving motivation for many Americans is just not there! I know French and a good chunk of Russian, but I had to pursue that out of offered educational programs. I think part of my personal problem with the America bashing is that I am unlike many Americans, and still am very patriotic... it's a sort of Catch-22. I have to deal with fellow countrymen making asses of themselves in various mediums (tv, newspapers, magazines, etc) all the time - but doesn't every country? I guess my problem is the instinctual herd mind of "Trend" - and a lot of things that foreigners pin on Americans are not attributes that are uniquely American - I often find it hypocritical, and I wonder how people dismiss their own ignorance! I also don't hear Americans bash countries like I hear other countries bash each other - I don't know why there is this perpetual **** fight. It seems like foreigners take it personally if we don't know every thing about their country - or if we don't care. I guess my question is, why do YOU care so much about what we think? Which is like some sort of 5 year old just begging to get attention from an adult. If we meet an Englishman who doesn't know about America - we don't give a f*ck... we're like, OK - whatever... the average american doesn't take it personally. I think the attitude of the average american, and I do not speak for all Americans is, "Why do you think we should care about your country?" While I don't follow this train of thought - it does beg an answer - and I'm sure they would be interesting ones... and I didn't mean YOU as in individually YOU adidasss, I just meant in general. |

i think people are a little bit pissed off by the american attitude " we are the best, fuck the rest" ( i don't think you can deny that that attitude exists ), noone likes arrogance ( even if it is the objective truth , or simply patriotism ). i know i'd be proud as hell to be an american, and would probably shove it in everyones face, just like i try to do with these little pluses of being a croatian , which is really pathetic. and i think you hit the nail on the head with the child comparison, i think it really IS a desperate and pathetic need to be noticed. as a croatian poet once said "man, do not walk small underneath the stars", everyone feels the need to be considered special, to be noticed. that desire is especially present in people from smaller countries. by not knowing we exist, you somehow make us feel less importaint. and we want to be considered equally importaint as everyone else....( which of course isn't a realistic desire, but there you have it ). i ,of course, am fully aware that i'm better than everyone else... ![]() |

I know that I, singularly, can not stop these thoughts and actions - but I wish I wouldn't have to deal with it on this forum... it's not necessary for a constant co(k of the walk contest between any two nationalities. The rampant UK v US threads are just begging for arguments that cannot be proven... I will not forget my country nor culture, but I come to these forums merely as a human being. I think this should be a constant thought in everybody's mind. It would certainly make for a much more accepting world. |
