The top songwriters are poets.
People like; Dylan, Lou Reed, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon, Gil Scott Heron, Morrisey etc.

As for the worst? Far too many to mention.

Try and narrow it down though, because there has to be someone in mind that comes at the top of the list and someone who comes at the bottom. For me, the top would be...erm... to hard! The bottom would definitely be The Darkness though. Their rhymes suck. The top could possibly be Biggie. Good storyteller.

Ok...at a push Gil Scott Heron. Lyrical genius, poetry with a cutting edge, he packs a powerful punch and not a single word wasted.

This is the problem with me-I get drawn in by the hook, then start to forget if the band can't write songs or not. Like Oasis. Their words are poor, but their hooks are good. I'm going to say the best songwriter is John Lennon. Amazing talent.

Favourite Lennon song is 'In My Life' and 'Beautiful Boy'.
Still think Heron has the edge with 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'.
