Default Deep Cuts

This month, Rolling Stone had neil Young on the cover, and as a side bar to the story they showed some of his worst albums and the one song on them that was a "hidden gem." They gave a little description of each song and I gave it a shot.

Off his 1995 disc Mirror Ball the suggested "I'm the Ocean" and I'll tell you im really glad they did. At first I didn't like it, but after about three listens I think its one of the better songs he's ever written and one of my new favorite songs.

For the purposes of this thread list one song per post and give a slight description of the song, why people might like it and why they might not have heard it (i.e. its on one suck-tastic album). I put this in the general music forum so no genre would be excluded.

I'd like to ask for community participation in not posting anything that is:

1. On a greatest hits Album
2. On the radio
3. Covered by another artist.

Happy Posting

Primal Scream - Velocity Girl

Their first ever single & only ever released as a single. And you probably won`t find it anywhere because Bobby Gillespie completely disowns their 80s material & considered Screamadelica their first album proper.
But no matter what he says this is 80 seconds of pure 80s jangly pop.

Big3, so we have to do it off of a bad album of an artist or just an album of an artist?

Sorry, but I'm confused

I take a hidden gem to be a great song by someone that has somehow slipped off the radar or forgotten when that artist is talked about.

This threads intention to let those songs that slipped by us all have another shot to prove its worth.

If someone picks "Sweet Child O' Mine" they should be hit by a bus, but if you pick, say, GnR's "perfect crime" well you may have a case.

Just decide, its your chance to get something you really like out there.

Alright I guess I will give it a whirl

John Mayer Trio- Another Kind of Green

This song is one of the softer songs by the Trio. The whole band has this big sound but it is soft too. His voice is very tasteful for it and in the middle there is this nice quite breakdown deal that is rather relaxing.

Attempting to follow my own insanely tyranical rules I'll choose Metallica's "Trapped Under Ice."

This thrash stuff is usually given a back seat, but for every clown who comes up and says "they sold out man, they suck" should give this track a spin and remember who did what your favorite bands are doing now over 20 years ago and much better. Thrash in general has a "need for speed" mentality but the solo's in between the blitzkreig of Hetfield bark are omnipresent on the neck, blindly fast, and aurally damn good.

This is one of the tracks that remind me no matter what they put out, they were the forefathers of everything Metal today, and they were much better than Megadeath and Slayer combined. Punk, Metal, Thrash, hardcore, everyone loves Metallica's early stuff. This track is no exception.
