if you want something more accesible to virgin ears you might try:

Whistlin Past the Graveyard
Picture in a Frame
Fumblin' with the Blues
Make it Rain

Its tough to say anything is really acessible, IM me and I can send you some things.

I just looked into him, I found some snippets on artistdirect, I really like his voice I can see what you're talking about Big3 when you say it's not method it's just his own fire burning.

I'll look into him further, do you recommend any one particular album?
From what I've read from you each album is as good as the last.

EDIT: Is Blue Valentine still your favourite? Because on the first page it was, but that was posted over a year ago now.

i love tom waits as well - i totally agree that is the greatest singer/songwriter - he has definitely ventured into more genres than anybody except maybe frank zappa

his music is so great becuase its real - nothing is manufactured and everything has meaning

i love nighthawks at the diner, small change, blue valentine, alice, mule variations - i pretty much love all his albums!

a true legend

I only have Step Right Up but I like it a lot. The lyrics are great for it.

My favorite album is Blue Valentine. I'd go on but im starved I'll wait till someone who hates me insults him.
