I picked up 3 discs this weekend in a buy 2 get 1 free deal from a local used spot.

Both Guns n' Roses' Appetite for Destruction and Faith No More's The Real Thing have already been part of my collection multiple times in the past on both cassette and cd. They've also been ripped off or never returned in the past. They were both under $10 so I figured it was a good time to replace classics. There are no weak tracks on either album so long as you go into them with open eyes and don't expect either to change the world. Appetite is arguably the pinnacle of sleazy 80s hard rock, The Real Thing is one of the pinnacles of funk metal and a precursor to the more progressive elements that would find their way into some of the more technical alternative rock of the 90s.

The 3rd disc I got is new old stuff.

The Killjoys - Starry

They were a basic 3 piece Canadian punk rock outfit in the early 90s. I don't think their singles amounted to much of anything south of the border which, like it or not, is ultimately the death knell to any Canadian band trying to make a living playing just about any aspect of commercial music. Their breakthrough single is the lead track on this disc and I still think it kicks all sorts of ass, pretty sure I've already posted it in one of the punk threads but whatever - great video too:

Hail Spirit Noir - Pneuma (2012)

This is a strange one... While many black metal bands are starting to incorporate elements of progressive/psychedelic rock into their sound, this sounds like a progressive/psychedelic rock band that is incorporating elements of black metal into their sound. I'm only three tracks in and it's not quite what you'd expect from the description but it's the best one that I can think of.

Really really great French hip hop, can't understand a word yet I've been listening to these non-stop for the past few days. Thanks to ikvat for turning me on to these cats.

Yeah, I just downloaded it too. Not kept up with many of the Metal releases (of whatever sub-genre) in 2012 unlike Pete, but I shall look back through this thread at some point because there are quite a lot of interesting album covers than need a second look.

Harmonium - L'Heptade

Karnivool - Themata

Wanting to try out more prog rock, so get these two based on recommendations.

Interesting is probably the best way to describe it, it didn't hit the same note that bands like Sigh or Nachtmystium did with their incorporation of psychedelic
rock elements into metal, but it's definitely unlike anything I've ever heard.

Honestly I'd recommend you just do what I do and look through the top 300 or so for this year on RateYourMusic. Start off with just the top 100 and then start to add in your variables like the top Progressive Death Metal albums or Black Metal albums, and then do the same thing again but instead of looking at the Top albums, change that to "Esoteric". I'm not sure exactly what it takes into consideration but I've found a couple of gems that way before. June is a great month to get caught up on what came out during the first half of the year, and then I usually do the same again in January when there's usually nothing coming out to keep up with anyways.

I wish I could recommend you a couple of blogs too, but because of recent activities they've all but disappeared.

I do that, I just can't be arsed with that genre at the moment. But the "esoteric" option is a great tip.
