I don't see how me downloading music by some guy who has been dead for 20 years should be illegal.

You're taking money away from the record label, and that could cause them to lose interest in that guy therefore he loses his contract.

By buying a cd I am giving money to record labels who will use that money to hire lawyers to sue other music listening folk.
