Honestly my two recs are Godflesh - Streetcleaner and Drudkh - Autumn Aurora.

Godflesh has a sound that isn't like anything I imagine Elph would associate with metal, and the vocals aren't cheesy melodic metal but also not RARGH!. And Drudkh are a mostly instrumental band with a much different sound as well. Best two I can think of off the top of my head.

I feel like my own choices. Arkona. Dir En Grey. Waltari... would be seen as too cheesy, so that's why I'm staying out of this.

What's wrong with Paranoid? Has he already heard it or is it a bad rec?

Personally, I think metal has gone to more interesting places. Paranoid is of historical relevance, but metal is so much more than that by now.

Paranoid and LZ1 were the first albums I heard that were hard rock/metal and I enjoyed both. Just wondering if Paranoid would be a good entry level album for someone who either hasn't heard much or has heard some and doesn't like it so far.

Which is why I'm leaving the metal choices to someone else than me. Plus I promise to give any rec of yours a really serious listen.

Because it's Elph. I highly doubt he likes Black Sabbath.

I'd agree, which is why I said Drudkh. But I guess Deafheaven. I still say Drudk, but... sigh. Godflesh still sounds highly solid though.
