Similarly, these bands are trying to go beyond the banality of well tried-and-tested formats.
Well post rock bands right now are probably doing the best job at that.

You know you keep making it out like all new prog is the same, which its not. Theres a lot more to prog than Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree for that matter.

You really should check out progarchives, its basically the prog fans Pitchfork. Theres well over 3000 bands with their own bios and discography information, and most of them have free MP3 streams. Look around.

True that they are generally not instrumental virtuosi, but again, technical proficiency is not the aim and inventive/playful exploration is. And ultimately, I think "talent" is best kept as a measure of creative brilliance rather than technical prominence.
I'm not just talking about technical skill but also about song structure and composition. Simply coming up with an original sound is not enough for me if I don't like it. But whatever this argument is going around in circles.

On the topic of Deerhoof though, I would like to strongly recommend you to listen to Friend Opportunity because melodically that album is unbelievable. Some of the best melody writing I've heard this half of the decade.
I heard some stuff from it I think, I also heard them live and it was painful for me, I hate the guitar playing and can't stand the vocalist.

More inaccessible than Eskimo, no, more inaccessible than The Commercial Album, f*ck yes.

And Safe as Milk is fairly accessible, it wasn't until Trout Mask Replica that Beefheart got really really freaky.

I think he's talking compositional skill. Anyway, Porcupine Tree are doing something original. They are no doubt influenced by Floyd but they haven't sounded like them since before Signify. From Lightbulb Sun on they sound nothing like Floyd. Floyd never mixed in Metal riffing with psychedelia the way PT has done (Radioactive Toy is on one of their first albums actually).

Listen to See Emily Play and Jugband Blues then listen to Goodbye Blue Sky and Time and it seems like you're listening to two completely different bands, and you are!

Well duh, but of course they're gonna be compared, they both filled the same position for the same band at different periods in time.

I agree with you though, Gilmore is better, but I also think Pink Floyd would be nothing without Syd...Wish You Were Here - gone. The Wall - gone...ect.

Seems like 2+2=5 is a fan favorite, same with Wolf At The Door.
