Australian Music is Awful. (country, u2, Nickelback, AC/DC, cover)

Having just been to Australia and noticed that the local music on the radio mostly sounded like either U2 or Avril Lavigne cover bands and that Nickelback were a clear favourite band... I have the distinct impression that Australian music AND Australian musical taste are utter, utter shite.

Yes, I know AC/DC are Australian but please somebody tell me, are there any good Australian bands or artist (and don't say ****ing Kylie) around at the moment or is the country really the cultural black hole it seems to be?

Comments from the New Zealand posse will be greatly appreciated too

Tumbleweed were a good Aussie band, don't know if they're still active however.

And I'm ashamed to admit but the Aussie charts sound much like that of our charts

But at least we're not all "Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda"

I get quietly enthused. This time I forgot my camera though!

Well, in brief the best bits for me were:

1. Going to St. Kilda, which is one of the trendy parts of Melbourne with a main street a hundred metres or so away from the beach and lined with cafes.

2. Going swimming in the olympic swimming pool for free (great still being a student), which also included me overtaking the front-crawling club swimmers in the next lane whilst doing breaststroke. Go me!

3. The Melbourne Museum, which had a big Aboriginal display. Sure, Aboriginal art and craftwork isn't very exciting in itself but the social and historical issues around it are very interesting indeed.

4. Semi-naked women everywhere. Well, it was hot and I had been wishing EVER so hard.

Cat Empire are an intersting band. Also the Living End, very good punk rock. Andy is a great drummer, and they're extremely good live!

Strewth Fowler my son, all looks a bit pear-shaped round here or what. The govenor's talking, Saturday's game, very dodgy, very naughty, could go a little pear-shaped. If there's a rough things might be well iffy. These faces are a little bit hard, know what I mean, a little bit of oof, have some of that my son, bosh, sorted, ta ta, got me, so be clever. Good, now shut it!
