^I listened to it for the first time the other day. Honestly, it seems to me that the fact that most people find it so bad/weird at first is simply because most people don't listen to much jazz or 20th century classical or other progressive music. While I didn't grasp it in full (obviously no where near on a first listen) it doesn't seem to me to be particularly difficult. For example, the day before I tried it I listened to Boulez' second piano sonata and found that to be MUCH more difficult as far as hearing what's going on/general harshness, and I find much of the Xenakis/Stockhausen/Berio (and I've hardly listened to supposedly more difficult composers like Ferneyhough/Carter/Babbit/Boulez) I've heard to be more difficult as much of their music is more mercurial, in the sense that it is constantly changing and one can't, while listening, bask in fairly consistent polyrhythmic patterns.

Of course, we're all different and so some may indeed find TMR to genuinely be exceptional in this regard, but it seems to me to be just an expressive and fantastical album that I'm looking forward to getting to know.

Over five decades, Trout Mask Replica has proven incredibly durable, still sounding as bracing and radical as any rock music since. That’s even clearer in this remaster, sourced not from the decayed original masters but from less-worn backups.
Seems like we were just talking about something like this...

This gem of a performance needs to be posted in this thread...

Safe as Milk is still in my play list, and is exceptionally solid for a first album. I don't think I will ever get tired of Beefheart and his Magic Band.

likewise. for me, his earlier stuff is the best. although there's a few later jewels dotted around. upon the my o my is potentially my fav track although i've heard that he hates the album it's off. classic beefy being difficult though i suspect...

Back when I used to DJ I had Upon the My-O-My as sort of a "signature song". i allways started my sets with it. Unconditionally Guaranteed has grown to become my favourite of his albums actually. Didn't know he didn't like it himself, though. Safe As Milk I've kind of played to death, unfortunately. But of course it's superb, to say the least.

Yikes. Who did this to you? Was this at Guantanamo?

Well, to justify myself I must say I didn't used the word "favourite" in the previous statement as equal to "best" in terms of quality. But Unconditionally Guranteed is definintely the album of his I've played the most in recent years. I guess the reason for this is that it's one of his most accesible and therefore I've put it on whenever I have friends or family over, and yeah I guess I couldn't help myself but to like it more and more. I certainly like Trout Mask Replica and the likes aswell, but the mood of mind that it requires does not appear as often.

The same goes with Bob Dylan (and here's one to really frown on: ). One of my "favourites" of his is his '73 album Dylan.
