1. Sigur Ros - The Nothing Song

An ex girlfriend made me a CD full of songs that reminded her of me, and this was on it. She said that it was a song that was free to interpret in any way you would like, and it's really true. In the times when I'm feeling most down, this really gets to me, and when I'm feeling happy it has the same effect. I think it's a sad but optimistic song... I have the live version, it's much better

2. Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely

Just sheer brilliance, in my opinion it is THE definitive Radiohead song. If you don't already know, which you should do, it's about taking yourself out of a bad situation and just pretending that it isn't happening. The word atmospheric could be tied to any of Radiohead's output after OK Computer, however, this DEFINES the word.

3. David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

Side by side with Heroes and Moonage Daydream, this stands as my favourite Bowie song. I think it's probably a call to arms for teenagers everywhere, and even though it was made all those years ago, it still reflects really well on society today. And obviously the fact I actually feel like an androgynous sex god whilst singing it helps too.

4. Blur - No distance left to run

I think it's just the real emotion behind this one that does it for me. Damon Albarn is basically just a gurning twat, no matter how much I love blur. He sings songs about council estates and the like when in reality, he's had no experience of lower class English life in the slightest. Even though I love Blur and always have done, their songs struggle to connect with the listeners emotions in any way whatsoever. So when I first heard this song, I was taken aback - definitely a departure from anything I had previously heard from them, and the lyrics are just sublime. 'I won't kill myself trying to stay in your life' cuts right to the bone.

5. The Cribs - I'm A Realist

right... yeah. An embarassing inclusion to the list, but I feel I should add it for nostalgic value. The girl I'm with now, I have known since I was just a wee lad, and this is the song that was playing in the club where we first kissed... so let me off.

6. The Smiths - I Know it's over

I had a dream about my Dad the once (he's passed away) and he came to me and this song was playing in the background... and we had a big conversation about whether the Smiths were **** or not in the dream. Irrelevant to say the least... but I now see many more meanings to this song than I originally noticed, so for me personally it's got the most depth out of any Smiths song.

7. Jeff Buckley - Satisfied Mind

In my opinion, better than the Johnny Cash version, though both were close. It's just top notch, everything about it. The way Jeff sings it, as always, is beautiful. And the lyrics, though not devised by Jeff himself of course, are a master class in song writing. 'Money can't buy back your youth when you're old, a friend when you're lonely, or a piece to your soul'.... brilliant

8. Nizlopi - Worry

Because they were brought up nearby where I was, I seem to think that they are MY band... this song puts me in the best of moods no matter when or where I hear it.

9. Libertines - Vertigo

I had a casual relationship with music for a long time, and as I was of a tender age I obviously struggled to find any emotional connection with music at that time. But, like most teenagers, I picked up the Libs debut... and even though it's cliche for a British youngster to say about 'Up The Bracket', it really did change my life. From the very first track, the aforementioned Vertigo, I was hooked. It was just brilliant. A shambolic, messy adrenaline rush. I then went onto explore more bands of a similiar style (the strokes etc) and from there I just kept progressing. It was a turning point and had a great impact on me, and even though I now realise that it's just simple guitar music, I feel it still deserves an inclusion

Richard Hawley - Long Black Train

For me, I can't think of a better outro. It sounds like Christmas, it has a happy and warm feeling coating it, and it's basically just completely magical. Richard Hawley is just a genius and I think this song is his masterpiece.

I will listen to the couple of outstanding ones on my comp and will up a few more over the next week. Apologies to those who have upped. I am in process of combining two pc's worth of music onto an external HD I bought today and basically tidying it up. As soon as this is all sorted we are off and running again!

Release the bats - The birthday party

This song freed me from the trap of linear song structure, and the emotion in nick caves desperate bellow is frightening

Iron man - Black Sabbath

probably the first band that i seriously got into, and the only one from that early period that i still love. This song made me love music.

Close to me - The cure

Until i heard this song i was a classic metal head
this is perfect pop
and my ultimate envy

around the world - Daftpunk

this song opened up the world of electronic music for me
a world i now revel in as dance/electronica is my main musical focus
(even though im primarily a guitarist, i love my synth just as much these days)

The man who sold the world - David Bowie

I love this man

at home he's a tourist - Gang of four

got me seriously into post-punk and gave me the funk

Into my arms - Nick Cave and the bad seeds

sticks out really in my mind as it was the first song my grandfather, father and I listened to in the car after my grandmother died suddenly this year.

Break my body - Pixies

they are just plain fantastic

Paranoid android - Radiohead

A friend of mine gave this to me when i was seriously depressed and into some of the heaviest music known to man. It opened up a whole new musical world for me and was the beginning of my musical mind expansion.

Right-track hasn't gotten back to me about the link thing yet, so I figured I could add it in later?... Here's my list.

House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

I was playing cards one of the many times I do, with my grandmother and the guy I inevitably fell in love with... I've always loved this song and when it came on and this look came over his face and he told me he loved it. Think he said it was his favorite.

If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Wanna Be Right - Bobby Blue Band

Also played this song for the aforementioned guy. There were many problems in the situation and this song just says it all.

I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen

How I feel about not being able to be with someone. Everyone feels that way. You read too many books and listen to too many songs and watch too many movies and you find yourself over-emotional about everything and you start listening to I'm On Fire on repeat and bawling your eyes out cuz it speaks so much about a desire you can't covet.

Molly - Sponge

Always thought this song spoke true to what might one day happen to me or somebody love. See you naked in the bath, think you're drunk, I start to laugh. See the lipstick on your glass, cigarette stains on your hands... 16 candles down the drain.

That's How Strong My Love Is - Stones

When I love somebody, that's how I love them. Give them everything I've got and more. And the... pain that's inbetween the lines of the song, kind of hints to me about losing someone. That's something I'm too familar with. Pour tu, mon cher.

In These Arms - Bon Jovi

This is getting repetitive... another song about wanting someone that can't be there because of one reason or another. And you'd do anything... beg, steal, die, to have them with you. Like the roses need the rain, like the poets need the pain. And these were your words, your words were your songs.

Maybe - Janis Joplin

A song about wanting someone to come back, even if they can't and you know it in your bones. But you can't help it, it overpowers you. And you're thinking. Maybe. Maybe.

I Won't Back Down - Johnny Cash

When life's **** and you can't do it anymore, you've gotta remember you've gotta keep going. Words of wisdom from the man in black, who said, yeah, maybe he was goin' to a funeral. But he was goin' in style.

Why Does Love Gotta Be So Sad? - Derek and the Dominos

Yeah. Why the **** does love gotta be so sad? Says it all. Well I guess anything worth having is worth waiting for - aye?

As Long As I Can See The Light - Creedence Clearwater Revival

A song about someone who promises he'll come back, but circumstances are, now he's gotta go for a while. But he'll come back, as long as he can still see the light.
