The Crowquill 10

1. Art Brut "Bang Bang Rock and Roll"
This song essentially sums up my musical taste as it was just shaping. Loud, ironic and punk influenced with lyrics that shouted my exact views at that age. "Bang, bang, rock and roll / I can't stand the sound of the Velvet Underground / White Light! White Heat! / I can't stand that sound the second time around."

2. The Beatles "A Day In the Life"

Songs like For No One, Eleanor Rigby and this one were a big attraction to the Beatles for me. Dealing with loneliness and just a general melancholic sound I found myself playing them constantly, the Beatles really helped expand my horizons musically. My favorite lyric: I read the news today oh boy / About a lucky man who made the grade / And though the news was rather sad / Well I just had to laugh / I saw the photograph / He blew his mind out in a car."

3. Modest Mouse "3rd Planet"
The thing that really annoys me about amazing opening songs is I find myself going back to them frequently and it holds up getting into the rest of the album. This was the case with 3rd Planet, it was probably the first Modest Mouse song I really liked, it's still in my top 5. Favorite lyric: "Your heart felt good / It was dripping pitch and made of wood / And your hands and knees / Felt cold and wet on the grass to me"

4. Belle and Sebastian "Piazza, New York Catcher"

I fell in love with this song instantly upon hearing it, it sums up alot of what I love about music in one song. A wordy acoustic song dealing with love. Favorite lyric: I wish that you were here with me to pass the dull weekend / I know it wouldn’t come to love, my heroine pretend / A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day / You’d settle for an epitaph like “Walk Away, Renee” / The sun upon the roof in winter will draw you out like a flower / Meet you at the statue in an hour."

5. Morrissey "Late Night, Maudlin Street"
Morrissey's musical career has been lengthy and full of lyrical genius, this song contains most of my favorite lines which says alot and I think it's one of the most honest songs i've ever heard. Favorite lyric: "You without clothes / Oh, I could not keep a straight face / Me without clothes / Well, a nation turns its back and gags."

6. Linda Perhacs "Hey, Who Really Cares?"
This song stunned me when I first heard it, it was so serene and pure. Her voice sounded so fragile and as soon as I heard it I was brought to tears, something music rarely does for me. The song seemed to have been written at just the right time for me and where I was at that moment. Favorite lyric: "Hey now, who really cares / Hey, won't somebody listen / Let me say what's been on my mind / Can I bring it out to you / I need someone to talk to / And no one else would spare me the time."

7. Antony and the Johnsons "Hope There's Someone"
Antony has possibly the most beautiful voice ever and sings with such pain it's intense enough to make Hitler break down and cry. My favorite lyric: "Oh I'm scared of the middle place / Between light and nowhere / I don't want to be the one / Left in there."

8. The Shins "New Slang"
This song will change your life, I swear. Favorite lyric: "If you'd 'a took to me like / A gull takes to the wind / Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree / And i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores / And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well."

9. Patrick Wolf "Ari's Song (Nico)"
Now I cannot stand Nico, but damn Patrick Wolf covers her beautifully. I've always felt Patrick should release an album composed of piano songs because he does them so well. Favorite lyric: "Sail away my little boy / Let the wind fill your heart with light and joy."

10. Elliott Smith "King's Crossing"
This list wouldn't be complete without an Elliott Smith song. So yeah here it is, my favorite song he's ever done. Favorite lyric: "It's Christmas time and the needles on the tree / A skinny Santa is bringing something to me / His voice is overwhelming but his speech is slurred / And I only understand every other word."

A BIG JUICY DUB TEN

Dub is not some ever changing musical form. It is a state of mind and flow. Sonically the music is brave and bold. Musically it is straightforward yet comforting.I tried to include modern and classic dub and with a wide range of musicians. Sit back, roll a big fat one and chill ras clot.

1.DUBMATIX-BLACK NILE DUB.
2.KING JAMMY-SLOW MOTION DUB.
3.SCIENTIST-DO IT EVRYWHERE DUB.
4.AUGUSTUS PABLO & DUB SYNDICATE-PRESSURISED.
5.TERMINALHEAD & MR.SPREE-TWISTED SYSTEM (ruts dc dub)-a bad choice now listening back!.
6.FARDA P-THE BLACK SINGLE (DJ kicks rockers hi-fi mix).
7.DREADZONE-STRAIGHT TO A SOUNDBOY.
8.DUBMATIX-BOOM BOOM REMIX.
9.LEE scratch PERRY & MAD PROFESSOR-DUB THESE CRAZY BALDHEADS.
10.SCIENTIST-DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES.

I appreciate the sentiment Ethan. You won't like it, and that's ok. Maybe though a few out there will give it a listen and hear a new genre of music.

Dub is Great.

Anywho

1.The End, The Doors
Listened to this when I was around 4 on a vinyl record my father has. Ive been known to randomly sing this song at any given time. I whisper the blue bus part alot. Possibly the Doors best song, besides five to one.

2, Bodies. The Sex Pistols.
I like to call this sneer music. A song to piss people off, a song to sneer along to, in an automobile, going down the main way, all the time laughing and having a jolly good time.

3.Joy Division - Day of the Lords.
I want this to be my Death song, amazing vocals from Ian Curtis, Its the gloomiest track i have ever heard. Brings me back to my precious life..where will it end.

4 NWA - **** the police.
I found this song when I was six. My mother was at a loss due to my repeating of the lyrics. I got recess taken away for having it on a tape player...coming straight from the underground.

5. Blind- Korn
Listened to this is grammar school, along with my little derelict friends, aka the target group, I remember after columbine, being brought to the office for psycho evaluation, along with the other 4 kids who listened to Manson, korn, and the likes.

6. PIL - Public Image.
Oh how I enjoy this song. Public Image is something i sneer at, I violate every code of conduct that would go along for a decent public image.

7. Mayhem - deathcrush
The destruction of my faith for the better good, of making my mind a whole. Picked up this EP in boston when i was 11.

8. Genocide Organ - The elders of Zion
Industrial at its hardest, made me appreciate music that wasnt music.

9. Napalm death - Evolved as one
Holy ****, my love for brutality started in 98 when i picked this up from a friend,.

10. Elliott Smith _ Cupids trick
..Its my life
