Maybe its my memory failing, I just remember them being pretty lame. I loved Downfall which is why I got "The Lonely Position of Neutral" (?) and found that I hated most of it. Then again, I did say out of my CD's out of which
I only think that and Korn's Untouchables are pretty bad. Haven't heard any of their new stuff either.

Yes but Tool and Volta annoy me for solely that reason. Try hards tend to listen to them 'cause they think they're cool for listening to probably the most accessible and mainstream prog of today. It just sickens me. But their music annoys me too because of its ****ty-ness.

PS: I forgot The Darkness, they can be number eight.

My all time fav prog bands are: DT, Pagan's Mind, Transatlantic, Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Adagio, Angra, Kamelot, Shadow Gallery, Ark, Evergrey, Liquid Tension Experiment, Nevermore, some of Opeth, some of Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, Andromeda are ok.

Death metal: early Soilwork and In Flames, CoB, At the Gates, Arch Enemy.

Guitar Virtuoso: Vai, Satch, Petrucci, Yngwie, Becker, Michael Batio.

Other: Radiohead, Muse, some of Dragonforce, Nightwish, Machine Head, Killswitch.

Tool and Volta accessible?...Are you kidding me?...They are probably the most inaccessible bands out there, because they are so different that its quite hard for people to accept it.

DT are also inaccessible, but for completely different reasons.

Schism, Stinkfist and Sober are the only tracks that get any hint of air over here and even then it's once in a blue moon. Mars Volta is even worse off. I'd hardly call them mainstream.

Well, that's because their (Tool) albums are really old. I was talking about when they first came out. The songs you mentioned received so much unwarranted attention, especially "Sober." I think that particular track has the record for the highest amount of shared files of any sort of file on the internet. And Volta are slowly but surely climbing the mainstream ladder. But that's besides the point, the point is that the teeny-boppers listening to them annoys me the **** outta me...But it's a causation thing.

And you're saying it like you cant be prog if you are mainstream.

Pink Floyd were one of the biggest bands in the world during the 70s, as were ELP, Yes and Jethro Tull...Prog was very mainstream until punk and new wave came along.

The reason Dream Theater arent popular isnt because they dont have the mainstream sound, its because they arent doing anything new, as talented as they are, they use a lot of old tricks from the books of 70s metal and 70s prog without building their own sound, while Tool and TMV do borrow heavly from 70s prog, they do it while still maintaining their own identity, which Dream Theater havent done, to most people they are just another prog metal band...Also they just arent worth the hype IMO.
