So I know there may be a thread about this somewhere, but how they dare. What has our music industry come to. How is we are forced into hearing this "AMERICAN IDIOT" stuff. I'm reading how some contestant sang an Our Lady Peace song tonight. How dare he?!! And what makes me even hotter is the fact that this idol guy will no doubt make more money the OLP has ever made. It is a shame what the industry has come to. As a musician it makes me mad to see this happening! At least I know there are still some musicians that I can talk to here!!!

Its like this...some guy stand up on stage of American Idol tonight and sings Innocent by Our Lady Peace. He will probably leave the show with a 50 million dollar record deal right off the bat. While the Our Lady Peace has been around for years and will never make near as much as what this Idol's first record deal will amount to.

It seems in today's music world....You are mainstream...aka...American Idol material you get to move right to the top of the record industry. While the real musicians live off nothing to try and make it to the big show. Only to do so after years and years of hard hard work and suffering, not being on some Idol show.

they were manipulative poop lickers early in their career in a vain attempt to establish themselves as real rockers. anyone with a clue could see through their facade. at this point maida seems intent on portaying himself as some modern renaissance idealist (read: whiny bitch)

a good friend of mine randomly caught them twice on a university tour early in their career. they'd plant someone in the crowd to instigate crap with security at whatever show they were playing at roughly the same point in every set to the point of getting tossed. then maida would have a hissy fit about letting their 'fan' back in and how the band wouldn't play again until the security 'goons' let their guy back in. their bogus act of anti establishment rebellion probably worked on most drunken frat kids. i still think it's contrived.

i saw them in concert a few years later. they stand as THE worst live band i've ever watched. so predictable, calculated, and most of all... boring. i had expected a pop act like esthero to be more of a lip sync deal (she performed earlier that day), but she came out with a 7 piece band and they SMOKED her pop tunes. OLP honestly sounded like they were just playing the cd really loud.

even with all the crap i just said about them their first album had some decent tracks on it. starseed and naveed kicked ass. and the idol mention will probably generate a fair boost of cash to the bands next royalty check.

This really isn't about OLP. Who really cares. The point was not that it was OLP. The point was much broader than that. And as far as the antics of OLP with set fans and whatnot...it happens, not just in small bands, but some of big band you worship too. As long as you enjoy the music who the F* cares. You do make a valid point though. This will probably bring more attention to the bands whose songs are featured on Idol.

So I guess the question is this...given the choice what would you do?

You either
A. Are a top 10 contestant on American Idol and might win, whatever...

or

B. You play club and bar after bar until you make it. Someone from a label finds you...whatever.

Does one gain you more respect from other musicians?
Does one make you a better musician?

And you are right and wrong Swim...you may not be in it for the money....but many many people in the industry or trying to break the industry ARE.

you seemed pretty intent on using OLP for your example like they were some great artistes being slandered by corporate whores. i call them on the same level as idol only a few years early.

i made my choice a long time ago. i took the time to establish my views of music and art within the context of the human experience for myself without needing external validation. no one needs to tell me i'm right or that i'm good or ok. if you like my sounds that's cool, if you don't like them that's cool too. if you want to give me crap about my sounds then i'll tell you to suck my ding dong while i think up a better way to tell you how to eff off.

why does respect from other musicians matter? why do you need their approval to validate your creation?

is it really less pressure to perform live in front of thousands of people knowing it will be broadcast to millions than it is to play to a bunch of your buddies at the local bar? does banging out 3 chord punk rock for the same 2 dozen people and a handful of strangers make you a truer musician than someone who'll risk leaving their family and friends behind to perform around the world for a living? or someone who forgoes a social life to develop virtuoso talent on their instrument?
