Odd request.

I enjoy trip hop, but I am discouraged by the generally cheerful, almost poppy trip hop I hear. I am looking for more trip hoppy bands that are similar to Massive Attack. Dark, dangerous, brooding music that makes you want to either punch something or violently make out with your significant other.

Trip hop that is on the heavier, almost metal side works as well. Or metal that sounds vaguely like trip hop. Whatever.

Or anything similar to this.

How about Amon Tobin? He can be fairly dark sounding if that's what you're looking for. Maybe not violent but certainly simmering and threatening sounding at times.

Portishead's Third is a pretty dark album.

I recommend checking out his album Out From Out Where. All his albums are good but that's really the cream of the crop imo.

Could anyone recommend where to start with Natural Snow Buildings? They seem to have MANY albums.

Waves of the Random Sea, it's one of their most recent releases but it's my personal favourite. The Dance of the Moon and the Sun is very good too.

Cheers, I'll investigate those. They seem to have quite a large and messy catalog and it's impossible to know where to begin.

Yeah I've only got three of their releases myself, I get the sense that they're one of those bands that gets better with age.
