For me it's more of a nostalgia thing

The sound quality is worse, but not much, and the graining sound feels authentic and somehow closer then the production of digital sound.

The jackets are great, photography, artistry, poetry, cool little tid-bits about bands\artists. Plus there is the thrill of finding a used record that's been tough to come by.

Hold up a CD and and LP one in each hand, same band, same album and see which one looks\feels more interesting.

good thread. For me, born mid-80s, vinyl wasn't the popular medium when I was growing up. I got it now just because it's a hobby that allows me to collect something that I love, and that I don't just stare at (baseball cards, stamps et al) but that I get to interact with. The sound quality is not the best, but again it's the event of sitting down and listening to a record straight through, side by side - and not skipping around. It's nice to hear the album as the artist intended!

Recently picked up:

Beatles - Abbey Road
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Rise and Fall of the Spiders From Mars
Zep - Houses of the Holy

all for about 18 bux at a little shop down here. I think my gf bought me Smashing Pumpkins' - Siamese Dream for no reason really at a pretty awesome record shop in Lawrence, KS... I'm not supposed to know though.

As for starting a whole new music collection - go to garage sales, yard sales, ask your friends' parents - just get a nice base going and then you can start picking and choosing. Or go slower and get the albums you really want, it's great either way.

Think I'm gonna put on some Mothers right now, actually!

Some releases are only on vinyl, they're harder to lose and the liner notes are much cooler. I think the sound is extremely close. I have a few out of prints that are like 20 years old and sound better than any mp3s I've ever found.

Hmm i always thought i heard people swearing that the sound quality was better..... perhaps it was the authenticity that they were talking about. I dunno would i have the patience for vinyls really, i would end up leaving them out of there sleeve on the floor somewhere. And as far as i know Vinyls are more susceptible to dust than cd's right?

I love vinyls . I'm a big-time collector on a small-income basis. I do what I can ha. It's not much but it's coming along. I've got Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane. I believe I have Axis: Bold as Love by Hendrix... or another Hendrix one that completely blew my mind. I've also, on the other hand, got 2 Frank Sinatras... and something called Boomerang? That I mistakenly bought, because it was in the Jefferson Airplane section... anyhow. Also have Stones Got Live If You Want It. Great fun, six flags.

I got really into vinyl sometime last year. I like them so much better than cds. One of my favorite vinyls is a Dead Kennedys one for some reason, possibly because the sound makes me feel more like it's live.

Theoretically, the sound quality of vinyl is better when new. The signal is analog, which means the sound wave is "drawn" unbroken on the vinyl. CDs use digital, which is basically numbers representing a bunch of point-samples of the music. Since the points are finite in number, it can't be continuous, so is only an approximation. A very good approximation, but not perfect.

However, vinyl sound quality degrades in quality over time, as the needle distorts the grooves more and more over repeated playings. CDs don't degrade in sound quality (at least not for many decades).

Of course, what with varying quality of needles and such, it's not a given that vinyl will sound better even when new. With a perfect needle, it should. But not much better and not for long.
