Well, the Smiths would get in straight off for me, but as much as I like Morrissey, I just don't think his time has come to join a Hall of Fame...same goes for Elliott Smith, for the same reason.

Fair enough, regarding his solo stuff and without being biased, there's definitely fan-only stuff there.
That said if he were to be nominated as a sort of 'icon' involving his whole career he should go in no doubt, i noticed Damon Albarn was nominated in the old Hall of Fame and i think that was the best option because he obviously has far more talent than can be shown in just one of his projects.

I like Elliot alright, but I'm not a fan, and lets be honest, how many Neil Young types do you need? I don't think he's made any really important contributions, and I don't like him enough to just vote yes anyway. So no.

Um, are you serious? How many Neil Young types do we need? Elliott Smith doesn't even sound like Neil Young. I'm not even going to bother replying to the rest of what that implies because I find it snobby and ignorant.

Wow, I wouldn't expect this much dissent from a forum which is generally amicable towards his music.

Personally, I only discovered Elliott a few months ago, 'round my birthday, and he certainly grew on me quickly. I feel such remorse that I didn't listen to his music sooner, while he was still alive. He may not have been an amazing musician, but he was a great songwriter and a poignant lyricist, and certainly deserves a spot in the MB Hall of Fame.

Is it just me, or am I sensing a huge divergence in viewpoints between peoples across the pond?

Thats why I said type and not clone. Of course he dosen't sound like Neil Young. What I meant by "Neil Young type" is that he's just another singer songwriter that mixes folk with pop, which is one of the biggest (and worst) musical cliches today. He wasn't doing anything remotely new.

How many singer/songwriters were doing things like this?

Let me try and use an example. Nick Drake certainly had fans in his time but it took many many years after his death to achieve the revered status he has today with many people. I think the same will happen with Smith. Of course he has fans now but as for a hall of fame I think it's not quite his time yet.
