Based on what little I have heard it's a no from me.

I keep seeing people talk about them in hushed revered tones talking about all these influences they have.
In fact a lot of these influences sound like they should appeal to me yet from what I have heard they just sound like one of many bands of this ilk.

They are not particularly original TBH but they take all the best bits of prog, ambient and Rock and manage to make a satisfying whole. I can definitely see many people being quite frankly bored by them and I'm not that surprised that they have divided opinion. For me they make exactly the music that I really like but i'm not blinkered enough to realise that they are not groundbreaking.

Well of course not everything can be groundbreaking so I won't hold that against them.
I think you nailed it when you mentioned them taking the best bits of other stuff. I think it's fine doing that if you can do something interesting with them and in this case I don't think they do because to me they just sound like your average 90s/00s rock band influenced by that sort of stuff.

I'm sure this will go down real well but I find this stuff to be basically musak with guitars.

Have you heard their early stuff? Quite a lot different to what they are about now. After touring and working with Opeth, mainman Steven Wilson admitted to taking a heavier direction and their output from this time ('99 onwards) does have it's fair share of banality. Earlier albums like Voyage 34 and Up the Downstair may float your boat a little more.
