A new tool (called Genius, lolz) recently came out for iTunes that lets you assemble a new playlist (from various artists) with the click of a button. It uses music that sounds similar by comparing songs in your library to each other, and then making a playlist out of them.
So far, it's worked impeccably for me, but I've discerned that if you don't have enough of a certain genre it won't be able to compile as large a playlist. The idea behind it is similar to Pandora, Last.FM and other free radio websites, but everything you listen to is YOURS to begin with, which is awesome. The tool itself is free, too. Here's an example playlist made by selecting "In The Name Of The Father" by Black Grape:

Lol, Genius is a poor 'smart' playlist, anyone can make a better one.
I had to leave the damn thing on all night just for it to 'read' my library. I can't believe iTunes went to version 8 and yet barely anything new was added, and nothing exciting at that. I still had to download it to try the new version out, though I suspected it would still be poor. |

I share lucifer sam's enthusiasm for Genuis. I've tried it out with several songs and it's made better playlist than i ever could. Unlike me it doesn't always use the usual suspects. I can see this coming handy when I am in the car with my friends.
