Eh, you just compared football to music! Well, music can get away with not having a certain technical level, because it can bring an emotional intensity instead. It's called an expression. If it's successful it can move us very deeply. I'm sure football players also bring a lot of emotions when they play, and we can admire them for that, but without some technical level, it won't win them a game. There are no points for emotions and aesthetics in football, right.

Right, it wasn't an absolute comparison. I was just pointing out that I, personally, tend to enjoy music more when the singer can actually sing.

Football is awful no matter what. I don't think good vocals matter.

Besides I don't think it's really all that possible to define a good singer. The masses would probably say, like James said, singers like Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. No matter what people say, Hole are an awesome band, but by those standards Courtney Love isn't a 'good' singer, but she's good because her style falls in line with the kind of music she's portraying.

This thread is dumb.

I only judge the music for how good the quality of the arrangement is. I don't really care for singing, but yes there are several singers out there like Miley Cyrus who is bad at singing, but its not her voice, its the type of songs she does, they don't flow well with her voice. If I were to be famous for the songs I make, then I would be under the 'Can't Sing category of this thread, but at least the music is good. I also think that Celine Dion isn't that bad, but I would like to know why in paticular she is bad.

Well..I'm too lazy to go through the first 11 pages of this thread, but I'm sure someone has mentioned him already.

Without autotune most popular singers these days would be totally screwed. And that's coming from a former vocal coach with 27 years experience. Yes! I am practically ancient but I can still hear. (Thanks God!)

Daniel Smith of Danielson. Has a knack for melody, and the worst singing voice known to man.

I hate performers that are technically great but have absolutely zero to say with their golden pipes. I also hate vocal gymnastics in ANY song, which is why American Idol drives me absolutely batty. Not a single contestant on the show ever sings a song and just respects the song for its musical qualities, it's always a platform for projecting themselves... which is why I think shows like that are horrible for the evolution of music as an art form.

But really it's whatI should expect from a TV show that is really primarily about the cult of personality more than anything else...

But I digress...

Technical singing talent is pointless when it completely lacks direction, purpose or respect for the art of songwriting and the broader emotional aims of music in general.
