Default NeoTokyo: The Future of Japan via Spain

NeoTokyo

I really enjoy this band and they appear to be virtually unknown so I figured I give them a little love here.

They're from Mallorca, Spain and they play a kind instrumental music that's hard to describe, but if you twisted my arm, I might label them as post rock. They don't really sound like contemporary post rock though, they're more akin to earlier post rock like Trans Am and Slint. Kind of. Take that early post rock foundation, build a sample-heavy Akira aesthetic on top of it, throw in a dash of Revolting Cocks and a dash of Spanish nightlife and sprinkle in other assorted influences from dub to punk to hip hop to Vangelis, and you have NeoTokyo.

I saw them randomly about 12 years ago at a club in London and was really blown away. I bought the one vinyl EP they had at the time from the merch table and enjoyed it but always wanted to hear more. I remember trying to look them up online years ago and not finding anything so I kind of figured they had never done anything else. Fast forward to a couple months ago when I stumbled across them again and discovered that they've released a decent amount since I last heard them, and it's all very good.

Their bandcamp page is really worth checking out and has a lot of their material available for free download, including their most recent album, Dengen Bakku.

Also, below is a track I'm pretty fond of from Dengen Bakku, "The Spinning of Fate". I do recommend checking out more though, they're the kind of band that requires more than a single track to appreciate.
