Agreed on Beats, I got a free (thankfully) pair of Beats earplugs and I was astonished how hard they sucked, for $20 these

...utterly annihilated these for $100

My favorite headphones I've ever owned were Grado ($150)

I'll hop on the Beats hate train as well. They seem to be more of a fashion accessory than anything else.

Anyways I've definitely noticed a real difference in my musical listening ever since I started using better headphones and right now these are my two pairs.

Sennheiser CX 300B MK Precession Enhanced Bass

They're relatively cheap, around $40 USD and I've had nothing but good times with them. I mostly use them at the gym, but occasionally I'll use them with my laptop or iPad if I'm laying down in bed. There are definitely better Sennheiser earbuds out there, but for under $50 I have yet to find a better pair of earbuds.

Numark Red Wave DJ Headphones

I use these when I'm at my desktop and they are easily one of the best pairs of headphones I have ever owned. Great for music with lots of bass and they really cancel out the noise around you. For under $100 too they're a steal, although if you feel like dishing out a little extra money you can certainly get something better, but for budget headphones they're great.

I like the $50-70 range for everyday wearabout headphones that I can toss around a bit. As for the CX200s, I actually really love those. Incredible sound for the $20 price tag you can usually find them. And I would agree about the headphones>earphones in higher level priceranges. Keep the cx200s for in-ear, and spend money on some headphones with an open-cup. Sennheiser HD555's are the best pair for the price that I have ever tried, and the newer edition (HD558) should dip nearer to the lower $100s on some holiday sales.

I bought a pair of earbuds by Skull Candy and after a few months they gave me a massive ear infection and I even cleaned them regularly. I was driving down the road when blood and pus started dribbling down my ear onto my neck and collar. Never, EVER again!
