Default Three requests

Starting a new thread for this, because I'm looking for three recommendations from three different genres, and the existing rec threads didn't deliver for me last time.

First request: I could use some Philly soul in my life.

Second request: I played Bob Marley's greatest hits yesterday. About half of it ("One Love", "Buffalo Soldier", "I Shot the Sheriff", etc.) I enjoyed, but the other half bored me to no end. Looking for some not-quite-as-repetitive reggae with interesting lyrics and melody.

Third request: No idea what genre this is, but something along the lines of David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, the song "Heroes" in particular.

Danke schoen.

The Stylists

Mostly any band on TwoTone Records, try The English Beat and The Specials.

That is tough, it's part of Bowie's Berlin years, it depends what about the song you are looking for. Post Punk, Shoegaze, and NDW come close to the musical ideas Eno and Bowie were exploring and pioneering in the song. The Psychedelic Furs, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Chameleons, Xmal Deutchland and a few others like them are worth checking out. I don't know if they will provide the same music experience you had with Heroes but it's worth a try. nb I'm not trying to say those bands make songs exactly like Heroes but there are certain elements in their music you might since you like that song.

Thanks a million, Nea. Echo and the Bunnymen sound particularly cool. I look forward to trying the rest of your recommendations this weekend.

That's second wave ska, not reggae.

I'm not much into Philly soul in particular, so I can't help you much with your first request beyond what Neapolitan mentioned.

I've always found reggae rather boring overall, so I can't help you with your second request.

If you're looking for something similar to "Heroes," Brian Eno comes immediately to mind. I'm sure you're already aware that he worked with Bowie during that time period. Try some of these tunes (if you haven't already)...

Brian Eno - Baby's on Fire

Brian Eno - On Some Faraway Beach

Brian Eno - Mother Whale Eyeless

Brian Eno - The True Wheel

I didn't say that it was "reggae." I gave him an alternative to listen to cause "the other the half [of Bob Marley's greatest hits] bored [him] to no end." Both are descend from Ska, so it seem like a safe recommendation to give. However, I was wrong by spelling it 'Two Tone,' it should properly spelled out as "2 Tone."

Other not so strictly classified as "Reggae" recommendations:
  • Toots and the Maytals
  • Fat Freddy’s Drop

This is fabulous, thanks Psy-Fi. I'm not familiar with any of Eno's non-ambient work besides Bowie and Roxy Music.

Obvious, but Heart of the Congos by the Congos is a great album.
Spoiler for song:
