Exclamation Certain tracks better on headphone?

Has anyone ever heard a track so amazing on headphones but it just doesn't translate well onto being played out loud on speakers? (especially on high volume) Is it just the mixing or is it because I've become used to hearing these tracks so much on headphones I subconsciously prefer it on headphones? Just a thought

I've always preferred listening to the band Green Carnation with headphones, specifically "Light of Day, Day of Darkness". There's a lot of layers to that track, so a good pair of headphones really helps you hear all the backing tracks.

I was thinking it may even be down to simple acoustics, my room may just not agree with certain songs. It definitely can't be the mixing because it would sound the same on headphones. I guess like you said, headphones allow you to catch the denser layers some tracks may have, and speakers unfortunately dissipate it.

I always found that headphones tend to create a completely different feeling to music than speakers. Does it always better to my ears? Certainly not, mostly it's just, well, different. The only case in which you'll always find my using headphones is when I'm listening to lo-fi stuff like some black metal, since the details are translated much better.

There's stuff that's splits tracks into stereo that makes it way better imo. A couple of examples are Dark Side of the Moon and Metal Machine Music. I honestly didn't "get" the latter until I tried it on headphones, it's far less dense that way.

I think headphones allow for a more interesting stereo experience than most people's speaker configurations. Having the two headphones perfectly positioned across from each other, isolated to each ear while blocking out background noise, it allows you to pick up a lot more subtleties in the music that sometimes get drowned out in a room with speakers (or a vehicle). However, that being said, you sacrifice nearly all significant bass experiences with headphones, of course the bass tones and frequencies are still audible inside your ear but your body feels none of the air movement like it would in a concert or a room full of great speakers.

I much prefer Boards of Canada through headphones.
I much prefer neurofunk through great speakers.

I was listening to some lo-fi drone piece at one point on headphones, and the bass tones warbled so much that I legitimately thought there was an earthquake going down. Other than that case, I totally agree with you on the bass thing.

You have not truly experienced "Fool's Overture" by Supertramp until you have listened to it with headphones.
