Default Poll: Old or New? What do you listen to more and why?

I was wondering what the distribution here was of fans who listen predominantly to albums from previous years, and those who mostly listen to recent releases? I'm also curious to see why so-and-so is more one way than the other.

Personally I've found I'm somewhere down the middle - largely because of an insufficient education on old stuff. In other words, there are many classic albums out there that I haven't heard, while your average person on these boards probably heard them years ago. As a result, I have to divide my listening between the recent and the old. But what I WILL say, is that had I heard the majority of the widely-held classics, I would spend WAY more time listening to current releases across a much wider variety of genres.

As for those who have heard the classics - who have "done music" so to speak - what makes YOUR ilk prefer to listen to old stuff than indulge in the new, if that's the way you lean?

I'm fairly down the middle, though i lean towards older stuff. I think that's mainly because i'm young and there's decades of great stuff before my time just waiting to be discovered. I think i'm in that mindset because when i was younger i'd always get into the habit of, when finding a good new band, exploring all their influences.

Almost exclusively new stuff. I try to download some classic every once in a while but I rarely like anything pre-1990s. The only recently discovered older band I really like are Talking heads and the only pre-1980's "classic" band I really like are The Doors. Unless I'm forgetting someone...

Lol; people who can't appreciate music from before 1980 need a nice kick in the back of the head, as most of what you guys seem to like/appreciate is either diluted, derivative of, or simply influenced heavily from what was done back in the late 60's and 70's anyway (across ALL genres), so what's stopping you from spelunking some and seeing what you might have missed?

Personally, I'm also somewhere in the middle. I keep an eye what comes out regularly, but I don't make-believe that there isn't forty to fifty years of great music behind this generation either.

Most of the stuff I check out is from within the past 20 years. I listen to stuff from before that but I'm more likely to listen to bands that I have the opportunity to see live.
