It happens up north, too. Probably half the shows I've seen in the New England area since '77 have had at least one joker in the audience yell out "Freebird" at some point during the show. It doesn't even matter what type of music is being played at the show, either.

I hate people who don't yell Free Bird. It's like, WTF is wrong with you? We're at a ****ing concert! People are like that **** is old. No **** it's old. So is handclapping but nobody gets all hoity toity about claps.

I don't remember anyone yelling Free Bird at the concerts I attended. A lot of them would flick their bics (lighters) though. Amazingly no one ever caught fire.

A completely new concept to me. Thanks for the explanation, though given how not everyone here is American, maybe a video or something else at the start other than two words might have helped clarify. I thought you were just slagging off the song.
