Swervedriver were top notch and really should have gone on to greater things. Son of Mustang Ford is such a classic track. Anyway, I lifted this from another forum I frequent were you had to define a musical genre using only three records:

Slowdive – Slowdive

…was the lead track on their eponymous debut EP in 1990 and rubber stamped their trademark sound of crashing guitars and ethereal vocals. Sublime stuff made even more remarkable by the fact they hailed from Reading.

My Bloody Valentine – Come in Alone

The stand out track from a stand out album (Loveless), Come in Alone could probably define the genre single-handedly. The wall of noise provided by Kevin Shields' gushing, dischordant guitars, coupled with the swirling vocals of Bilinda Butcher was often imitated, never bettered.

Chapterhouse – Pearl

A criminally underrated pop record, Pearl saw the introduction of drum loops and had the feel of a baggy/shoegaze crossover. Though hardly blessed with the strongest of back catalogues, Chapterhouse are a band synonymous with the shoegaze genre. This is undoubtedly their finest moment and deserves far greater recognition.

Chapterhouse - Whirlpool

an absolutely fantastic album. At first I wasn't that impressed but every time I listen to it my opinion grows. It's a classic in my eyes now, many many listens later.

Slowdive, MBV, Swervedriver...all great as well. I don't think there's actually any shoegazer bands I've heard that I dislike...some are pretty runofthemill but the nature of the genre means it's hard for me to dislike it.

I think The Telescopes deserve a mention at this point.

I've been listening to the Telescopes' s/t quite a lot over the past couple of weeks. "High on Fire" is such an incredible song.

I'll upload that Swirlies album for ya. Anyone else who wants it just say.

I got the Telescopes' Celeste EP (1991) off Dr.Schluss' blog the other day. Possibly the best three songs of shoegaze I have ever heard. Alot of love for this band.

I did indeed dig out my old Telescopes stuff after I posted this - particularly the 'Taste' album with 'The Perfect Needle' on it and the 7th Disaster & Precious Little E.P.s. I also found some old Bleach records at the same time...
