They're really connected member wise but I don't feel like getting into who was in them or any of that because I think they're popular enough now to stand on their own. David Berman is an incredible lyricist and American Water is a masterpiece.
Their new album is a step up from Tanglewood Numbers but none of it really touches the earlier albums. a friend introduced me to them, sending me 'lookout mountain, lookout sea', which is totally carried by Berman's lyrics. Everybody I've played 'san francisco B.C.' too just laps it up.
Personally 'american water' was not such a pleasure for me, a bit too Malkmus-esque. Still you can't argue with titles like 'honk if you're lonely'...
