The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady Blues & Roots Mingus Dynasty The Clown Honestly, his entire discography is pretty flawless. He was a phenomenal bassist and a spectacular composer. He never received as much respect as Coltrane, Davis, etc, but he is just as talented a compositional genius as them. As I stated before, I think Mingus Ah Um rivals the best in jazz, and that's certainly saying something. |

The Clown, now that is an album. Reincarnation of a Lovebird is one of my favorite songs ever. I always call it out during Jam sessions but no one ever wants to play it. When the alto and trombone open with that melody... they play with such soul. And the song just has the haunting quality to it that is so memorable.
The title track is hilarious. I love the story of the clown, especially the way it was read with the solos inbetween. And its got Haitian Fight song, awesome Bass lick. I once was told a story about Charles Mingus. He was playing in this club and two guys were sitting at a table and talking during one of his solos. So he stops playing, takes his bass and smashed it on the guys table. He then when upstairs, smoked a cigarette, and grabbed another bass and finished the gig. |
