Judged on her music she has phenomenal potential, judged by her actions she's not going to live long enough to reach it.

Her debut is much better than Back To Black. considering she was 19 when recording frankie was phenomenal. I'm not a huge Jazz fan, but she has dragged the genre into the mainstream.

Other musicians/artists have done far worse and have lived long enough.

soulful....doubt it, amy winehouse is a cheap imatation of soul. real soul singers can actually sing more than 2 notes for example aretha franklin, gladys knight, and many more. in my opinion there aren't really any soul singers out today.

Are you tone deaf?
Only 2 notes!
Surely you mean octaves?

Of which she can reach a reported 5!

Winehouse is the genuine article. A singer with true talent and every bit as good as the greats you mentioned.
In fact, I'd say she was a sight more versatile, if anything.

^ This taken from the year she broke.
Sober and clean.
I have no idea why people can't see she has obvious and undoubted talent.
Singing a Dinah Washington (she was no angel either) song in the style of the great Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.
Both of whom had serious drug problems and their place in music has never been in doubt.
