One of my favorite jazz drummers. He's been a working drummer since 1942, and has played with many different jazz artists, such as John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, etc.
In Coltrane's classic quartet of the first half of the '60s, his drummer of choice when Elvin Jones wasn't available was Roy. Coltrane was very pleased with Roy's style of drumming, and thought that he was the only other drummer that could elevate Coltrane as he did. Roy took a lot of chances with the music. He was doing in the '40s what Elvin started doing later on. http://www.drummerworld.com/Sound/RoyHaynesrelax.mp3 |
