George Best, the Irish soccer prodigy whose brilliance on the field and rock-star lifestyle made him an international celebrity in the 1960s and '70s, died Friday at Cromwell Hospital in London. He was 59.

The former Manchester United winger had been in failing health for several weeks and had multiple organ failure coupled with a lung infection and internal bleeding.

"Everyone has their own opinion about football and their favorite players," Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said. "But in terms of British players, you would find it difficult to think of anyone better."

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that Best was "the most naturally gifted footballer of his generation."

Best had battled alcoholism for decades and was diagnosed with severe liver damage in 2000. He received a liver transplant in 2002 but later resumed drinking.

George Best was my first hero, he made Maradona look like a Sunday League amateur.
The original "5th Beatle".

"The greatest player in the world." - Pele.

George Best...goodbye and God bless.

Amazing player. I don't know about him but I saw highlights of his talent on the news tonight. In particular, the ball he kicked out of the goal keepers possession and then headed it into net. Awesome.

George Best did'nt just play for Manchester United, when he played football, he played for everyone.

The most naturally talented footballer the world has ever seen.
To see him play was like watching a grown man playing against small children.
I was too young to see him play, but as a staunch United fan I know all about him.
Like your dad, his death has had a profound effect on me, he was indeed an icon of his time.

The likes of George Best, the player, will never been seen again in a hundred years.

A football genius.

I can't stop thinking about the news saying he got with "birds". What a funny term! It's much better and more respectable now, "chicks".

RIP George.
