Overratted? Underrated? (rock, album, white stripes, review, quote)

They were mentioned in Rolling Stone, they've worked hard to do that.

And Converge, they've gotten pretty popular.
And they damn well should be, they've only been in that band for 14 years or whatnot.

Definitely White Stripes. I think what you said about them pulling away from stardom, I don't think that's true. I think they just like to try new things and they go with the flow. I can't see them as trying to get away from stardom. When Elephant came out they promoted that so heavily, so it seems as if they weren't thinking of how popular they'd become if they posted that. White Stripes don't seem the type of band that would care about becoming too famous.

Which is why I believe they pulled away there are lots of bands that do that. They get popular and don't like what their representing or seeing in their crowds. Since Kurt, people are aware of what stardom brings you. Demanding simpletons who demand things like "**** this acoustic ****, play the rooooock" screamed at one of nirvanas last shows.

Now to you and me, who like when cobain and white throw it in second gear and play acoustic, we can appreciate what he's doing, we're there for the music. We didn't go to get wasted and "rock out" like some thick-necked tilted hat wearing jackass who bought the greatest hits CD.

I think Cobain opened a lot of people's eyes in terms of the naievity of music. He showed that while being rich and famous is well and all, it can also lead you to some 'worse' roads, like what happened to Marilyn Monroe etc. before him. I think the thing is, there are some bands who do just like you say, but The White Stripes did seem to put themselves out a lot to get themselves recognised. They were all over your magazines, radios, TVs and whatever. Get Behind Me Satan wasn't a third as much publicised, which is strange to me. If they put themselves out so much to get themselves recognised in the first place, why change?

I don`t really think it`s them that put themselves out.
The White Stripes are different to a lot of bands that have mainstream success these days.They did it by already having 4 albums out & constant touring.It wasn`t like they had one album out & suddenly MTV were all over them.

I didn't mean to say they are overrated-I think they deserve all the hype they get, and whatever path they choose good luck to them. Jack, as we know, is quite a quiet guy, so I think mouthing off in the papers etc. would have been against his personality. I didn't mean Jack doing a lot of publicising himself, I meant that the band as a whole had a lot of advertisements in the paper etc. They did interviews and stuff, which I really can't remember happening with Get Behind Me Satan. Maybe Big3 was right, that they did this because they didn't like the way that fame and stardom could lead them. Considering Jack, I wouldn't question this. But I think in terms of music Get Behind me Satan was on a par with Elephant, and that they hae been their two best albums. Considering that Elephant was so heavily advertised, if Get Behind me Satan was as good then why didn't it follow in Elephant's footsteps?

Because a lot of people didn`t like it

Just look at the 2005 thread , loads of people are voting it biggest dissapointment of 2005.

For my money De Stijl & Elephant are still their best albums by a mile.

I can't believe that's one of the biggest disappointments! That makes me sick as a music fan. It is a fine piece of work, original, daring and all the things a good album should be!
