Common sense tells me they're simply thrown around, but I was wondering if the post office actually has like, some sort of game where the loaders all see who can kick fragile packages the furthest.

No concern whatsoever is given to the fragility of the packages. Computers and plasma screens are thrown around like they're footballs. My first day I saw a guy throw a pair of bowling balls on top of a $2000 LCD screen, which made a very familiar crashing sound. I was shocked at first at the brutality at which they handled supposedly fragile items, but after working there, you realise that the stress and high tempo doesn't allow for any such concerns. You're literally drowned in packages when unloading, and the only thing you can do is to throw them away from you.
But I won't send anything valuable by the post again, I'll tell you that much.
