The Curious, Disconcerting and Uncomfortable

I had a half-hearted search for a thread like this but nothing popped up. The simple but endlessly funny premise is sharing our embarrassing stories, or your friends - the point is to cringe and laugh at other people's expense. This might die, but it has been relentlessly hilarious at other forums I've been on.

I'll break the alcohol related trend I foresee, with something that happened to me just yesterday. I got home and a brand new and very red couch was sitting in our living room. So I'm all excited but there's no-one to talk with, then the phone rings and it sounds exactly like my sister who just moved out.

So the conversation goes exactly like this:

Her: Hello s-

Me: Oh, hey nig, we just got a new couch, so fucking get over here and we'll recline with gin and juice.

Her: (pause) Hello sir, I was just ringing up to see if you were interested in donating to the Spastic Centre.

Me: Oh....no, sorry.

I'm still smiling about it. So, somebody share with me.

 That's hilarious... I've definitely mistaken phone solicitors for friends before too. Here's a call I still remember:

TS: Hey-

Me: Yo, what's up Josh? Tryin to hit a blunt? I got some maui waui (sp?).

TS: ...

Me: You there?

TS: We're calling on behalf of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod to thank you for your generous donation. *Click*

One of my finer moments to be sure.

Something like this happened to me back in college. Friday night and i was with some friends - we were a couple of hours in to a good mushroom journey. Phone rang, I answered, and it turned out to be my mom. She figured out what was going on pretty quick, and I got a good lecture about drugs and what not. She as pretty upset. The conversation ended with her asking me to pick something up at the store since I was going to visit her in a couple of days. I scribbled it down, and managed to remember to pick it up.

When I got back home and gave her the whatever-it-was that she asked me to bring, she was very surprised and wanted to know how I knew she needed it. I told her that she asked me to pick one up when we talked on the phone the a few nights back. Suddenly the tables turned – turns out she was drunk and doesn’t remember a thing!

Not calling you Josh, I hope.

I once was walking through Leeds city centre on a Monday morning. I had been to the festival that weekend so was pretty drained and looking forward to just going home. We stopped for some food and then set on off up the high street.

There was some woman seemingly walking towards me from the other side of the street. I glanced over and she was definitely headed directly for me. I hate these people asking me for spare change for "the bus" or to "use the phone" and i was pretty much broke anyway so when she stopped and started to ask me if i had any money i rather abrubtedly said "No" and kept walking.

I was a good 10 or 12 paces further up the street past her before i realised she didnt say "Do you have any money?", she actually said "would you like to help the children?".

A glance back confirmed it. She had a clipboard in her hand, a t shirt with the NSPCC logo on and was glaring at me like i'd just broke into her house and pissed all over her kids.

You heartless bastard. I'm a total sap for giving money away, I'm going to have to harden up before I start living in the city.

I do give every now and then when people ask me. Or for a cigarette is the other one i get alot.

It does annoy me though, especially the ones who wont take no for an answer.

Oh yeah, if it happened to me regularly I can imagine getting fed up pretty quickly.
