Elton John - You're Song - Lyrics Meaning

Elton John tackles a familiar theme from a different angle with `Your Song'. The lyrics themselves were penned by Bernie Taupin, long time writing partner of John.

Reflecting on his love for the other partner the song is beautiful captures the feeling that the writer hasn't yet been able to articulate his feelings. Branching from a need to show his love in any way he can, he is tripped by his own inadequacies when facing the magnitude of his feelings for the other party.

`So excuse me forgetting but these things I do / You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue / Anyway the thing is what I really mean / Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen'

Ultimately the writer realizes he has conveyed his feelings, concisely or not. Starting from the basics of buying a big house or making a sculpture the goal is later realized from much humbler means.

`And you can tell everybody this is your song / It may be quite simple but now that it's done.'

Elton later said in an interview that he had never written a better love song and probably never would.
